SURREY LIBRARIES: Guest Speakers are Deanna Scott and Karen McInnes
Karen McInnes is a graduate from University of British Columbia with a Masters in Library Information Studies. Karen is fairly new to the library world; she has recently transitioned from a career in public education with 10 years of teaching experience. Karen is excited to be part of the team at Semiahmoo Library.
Deanna Scott, a graduate from McGill University with her Masters in Library Information Studies, has worked for the Surrey Libraries for over 20 years and has been at the Semiahmoo branch since it opened in 2003, which is part of the 12 branches of Surrey Libraries, including the mobile library van & online branch. Deanna coordinates outreach presentations in the South Surrey community and works with different partners and organizations within the community.
Deanna & Karen look forward to telling you about the interesting resources and services that Surrey Libraries has to offer.

GARY HAS EXTENSIVE COMMERCIAL INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE, HAVING WORKED IN THE GREENHOUSE HORTICULTURE SECTOR, TURF/AMENITY PARKS, FIELD VEGETABLES AND MUSHROOM PRODUCTION. FEBRUARY SPEAKER - Russ Cmolik, co-founder of The Cmolik Foundation.
Russ will give “A brief history of the amazing Canadian success story of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers; and giving it back: The Cmolik Foundation.” In 2008, The Cmolik Foundation was created with the aim of providing opportunities for youth who have experienced adversity in their lives. Rooted in a belief in the power of education to transform and empower, they sponsor field trips and summer camps for elementary students; support undergraduate and graduate education and provide mentorship to ensure the healthy development of youth to become responsible, contributing members of the community.

JANUARY SPEAKER: Randy McCormick – Reduce, Re-use and Recycle Art
Randy is a retired gentleman who is all about his family and his out-of-the-box artwork. He creates art from found materials, especially old machines and musical instruments. He has created some 1500 hats that would do the Mad Hatter proud. In fact, several have been onstage as the Mad Hatter. His work is featured in art galleries; notably the Burnaby Museum in recent months. He makes his own kilts, is very active in local theatre as a much sought after singer/actor and works with several charities. He has thousands of stories to show how fulfilling life in retirement can be.

Judy ‘s father was British and was sent to China as a young man working for a British shipping agency and Importing/Exporting Co. Her Mother was Canadian. She went to visit her older married sister in Hong Kong, and this is where she met her husband.
Judy was the youngest of 3 girls and upon leaving China in December 1941 bound for Vancouver they were in transit when the Japanese invaded the Philippines. From January 1942 until liberated by the Americans in February 1945 Judy and her family were prisoners of war and this is where her father died in the camp shortly before liberation. She and her family did emigrate from the UK to Vancouver. In April 1945 Judy’s family were brought to San Pedro, California on an American troop ship and finally managed to get a train to Vancouver where her maternal grandmother and family lived. She will share her experiences in the POW camp with us.
